This 18 AWG, 3-conductor shielded VNTC (Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable) is a dual-rated Type TC-ER industrial cable. By combining the flexibility of TFFN conductors with the rigorous “Exposed Run” (ER) rating, this cable is designed for seamless transitions from cable trays to equipment without the need for conduit, while maintaining 100% protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Key Features of 18-3 Shielded VNTC (TC-ER)

  • Exposed Run (TC-ER) Rated: This cable has passed the specialized UL 1277 crush and impact tests. Per NEC 336.10, it can be routed between a cable tray and the equipment it connects for distances up to 6 feet without continuous support or conduit, drastically lowering labor and material costs.

  • 100% EMI/RFI Shielding: The overall aluminum foil-polyester tape shield and tinned copper drain wire act as a barrier against electrical noise, ensuring that sensitive low-voltage signals are not corrupted by nearby power cables or high-frequency machinery.

  • Flexible TFFN Conductors: Utilizing TFFN (Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture Nylon) stranded conductors makes this cable significantly easier to manipulate in tight junction boxes and complex control panels compared to standard THHN.

  • Industrial Durability: Featuring a flame-retardant, sunlight-resistant PVC jacket, this cable is resistant to moisture, heat, and oils. It is approved for direct burial and use in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations.

Common Applications

  • Multi-Circuit Signal Loops: Connecting transmitters or sensors that require a common and two signal legs to PLC input modules.

  • Industrial Automation: Ideal for robotic cells and automated assembly lines where the cable must drop from an overhead tray directly to machine-mounted sensors or actuators.

  • 120V AC Control Circuits: The Black, White, and Red color code is often used for 120V AC systems where Black is hot, White is neutral, and Red is a switched leg or signal.

  • Low-Voltage Power: Providing shielded power to peripheral devices such as fans, solenoids, or status indicators where noise suppression is critical.

Conductor Identification: Custom Color Code

  • Conductor 1: Black

  • Conductor 2: White

  • Conductor 3: Red

Technical Specifications

  • Conductor Size: 18 AWG

  • Number of Conductors: 3

  • Conductor Material: Bare Annealed Copper (Stranded)

  • Insulation: TFFN (PVC with Nylon Skin)

  • Shielding: Overall Aluminum Foil-Polyester Tape (100% coverage)

  • Drain Wire: Tinned Copper

  • Jacket: Flame-Retardant, Sunlight-Resistant PVC (Black)

  • Ratings: 600V | 90C Dry | Type TC-ER

  • Compliance: UL 1277, UL 66, IEEE 1202, RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: To ensure the shield functions as intended, the tinned copper drain wire should be properly terminated to a ground bus at the source end only. This prevents ground loops while allowing the shield to effectively drain induced interference. When utilizing the TC-ER rating, ensure the cable is secured and protected from physical damage in accordance with NEC requirements.
